LAESA-SHPE IN DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

On Saturday June 26, 2010, Kareng Peña, the LAESA-SHPE treasurer, had the opportunity of visiting the Club Ingenieros Roblegal, while  staying in Dominican Republic. Dan Golub, a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic started the project to “ promote fun, hands on education, as well as to get youth to learn the invaluable for the future: teamwork, responsibility, and leadership.”

The Club Ingenieros Roblegal is an Engineering Club in a small rural side outside of Baní ,with boys from ages 9-15, which gets together every Sunday morning, and does team-building games. Additionally, some sort of science or building project such as towers out of newspaper, bridges from spaghetti and glue, popsicle stick houses, floor plans, etc. Kareng  Peña had the opportunity to give a presentation to the kids about what engineering is, how fun it is and what SHPE is all about.

These Science/Engineering clubs are a new initiative in Peace Corps, Dominican Republic.  There are currently 5 volunteers working with Dominican youth through organizing scientific projects. They are going to have their very first science fair/engineering competition in October.
